Everyone wants that their certain routine things should be done automatically, so that they can focus more on other important ones. So today I am going to introduce you to one such online service which can automate your life a little to ease your work. This web-based service is IFTTT. It was created in 2011 and is a freeware.
IFTTT – Stands for “If This Then That”
It is an online tool which is available on net at https://ifttt.com/ and available in Google Play Store & Apple Store at below links.
What is IFTTT?
IFTTT is an app or online tool which can collaborate two services from a selection of more than 600 world class services including Twitter, Dropbox, Evernote, Fitbit, Telegram, Reddit, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Android devices and many more, to create an automatic action which you required.
IFTTT as the name suggest, if one services output meet the given criteria than it will trigger another user defined action automatically. IFTTT calls it “Applets”, you can create your own customized applets or can use from a list of thousands of applets available in the app.
So, lets start the process, first you must create an account in IFTTT.
IFTTT Login
In IFTTT you can either use an email id to create login or you can use Apple, Google or Facebook login.
When you login to IFTTT app after id creation, you will see a screen like below.
In this screen you can select the action device like Android device, Email trigger, Google Assistant, IFTTT notifications, Location, Phone Notifications etc. which you want to link.
Now we will see what all activities you can automate with the help of IFTTT. And if you are an Amazon Alexa or Google assistant user than this app can do wonders in your home automation. So, keep reading.
IFTTT Applets Examples
Here we will discuss some the famous IFTTT applet examples which you can use and similarly you can create your own defined applets as per your requirement.
1) Android Device with Location: When you turn on this applet, it can turn on or off android device services automatically when you go outside or inside a defined location.
Few examples are below.
a) Turn Off WiFi outside Home
b) Unmute Phone when leaving work
c) Silent on Location
d) Turn off Bluetooth when reach home.
e) Turn on vibrate mode for classroom.
Similarly, you can create your own applets with android phone functions and Location.
2) Android SMS: You can use these types of applets to create either create an action to your mobile device when a specific keyword SMS arrives to your Phone, automate text, or to back-up your SMS list.
Few examples are below.
a) Receiving a text containing “Ring Ring” will set the ringtone volume to 100% and call your device.
b) Automatic SMS Forwarding.
c) Automatically backup new text you receive on your Android device to a Google Spreadsheet.
d) Automatically text your family member “What do we need?” when you are at a grocery store.
e) Increase Volume and Tun on Music when receive SMS with keyword “Lostphone”
Similarly, you can create your own applets with Android SMS functions.
3) Email: You can use this applet to generate automatic mail to your mail id as per your desired criteria.
Few examples are below.
a) Get a daily 6:00 AM email with weather report.
b) Get alerts when a stock rises by certain percentage.
c) Get an email alert if it will rain tomorrow.
d) Quickly email yourself a Note.
e) Use email to send Telegram message.
f) Get a recommended Applet in your inbox every day.
Similarly, you can create your own applets with Email functions.
4) Google Assistant: You can use this applet if you use Google Assistant and want to enhance its features.
Few examples are below.
a) Custom Google Home Response.
b) Shutdown your computer.
c) Ask Google Assistant to post a Tweet.
d) Google Assistant Triggers GPS navigations.
Similarly, you can create your own applets with Google Assistant functions.
5) Notifications: You can use this applet if you want to have some customize notifications as per your requirement criteria.
Few examples are below.
a) Get weather forecast every day at 7:00 AM.
b) Get a notification when the International Space Station passes over your house.
c) Notification as a reminder to drink water.
d) Remind yourself to meditate every day.
e) Get notification when a stock drops by a certain percentage.
Similarly, you can create your own applets with Google Assistant functions.
